The impact of media in the society. How does media affect our society? It is clearly stated in the book that every aspect of media has been used to influence the society. How? Well, “The mass media in America today are ubiquitous – they are everywhere.” (Biagi, 1990, p. 3). It not only America but around the world.
Media Impact: Updated First Edition was written by Shirley Biagi in 1990 and published under Wadsworth Publishing Company in Belmont, California. The focus of the book is obviously, America. Although it’s focus is America, it is still useful because we can scope out how media affects other countries aside from the Philippines. The book has 411 pages with index, credits and sources. The author included all aspects of the media (ie. Newspaper, television, magazine, radio). The book’s genre is under General Information because all the fields of media were present in the book. There were also illustrations and statistical data inside the book like, how much companies invest in advertising, the average daily newspaper circulation, and the like. The book is written in a formal form with all the terms defined that aids the readers. The book also discussed some issues regarding the different fields of media. One could be sued for libel if “Words that, if false, have the potential to be libelous change with time and place.” (Biagi, 1990, p. 320). There were also research and other studies found in the book.
Media Impact: Updated First Edition is a successful book. Not only it’s informative but it’s an all-in-one reference book with all the studies being presented, the different fields of media and the issues. The author did a good job defining all the terms in the book. Though the readers could consult other sources for the data but overall, it accomplished what intends to be accomplished
