Anti-virus Program Review

Computer virus is rampant now a days. Actually, it moves fast at the same pace with technology. How do you combat this computer viruses? Wait, before that, what is a computer virus? Computer virus is a program. Not a disease. You don’t get computer virus from dust in your computer case (which is my mentality when I was little). It’s a program consist of codes varying from deploying malicious codes in your computer, degrading your internet connection, changing your registry, hiding particular Windows feature, and much more.

Attention Linux Users

Note to new Linux users: No antivirus needed

By Joe Barr on February 26, 2007 (8:00:00 AM)

One of the most common questions I hear new Linux users ask is “What program should I use for virus protection?” Many of them lose faith in me as a source of security information when I reply, “None.” But you really don’t need to fear malware on your new platform, thanks to the way Linux is built.

Savvy Windows users have to watch their virus checkers as closely as the head nurse in the ICU keeps an eye on patient monitors.

Virus, Worm, and Trojans

Reading daunting security threats from Sophos (http://www.sophos.com) the leading virus remover, I’ve found out that there are alot of virus, trojan and worm variations. These are what I found.Taga Lipa Are! is a VBS/Solow-B type of Worm. No variations has been set.Execution:When run VBS/Solow-B attempts to spread via removable storage drives and copies itself as FS6519.dll.vbs.

VBS/Solow-B also copies itself to \FS6519.dll.vbs.

The following registry entry is set to run VBS/Solow-B on startup:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
FS6519
\FS6519.dll.vbs

The following registry entry is set:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
Window Title
TAGA LIPA ARE!

VBS/Solow-B also creates the file \autorun.inf which contains the following lines:
[AutoRun]
shellexecute=wscript.exe FS6519.dll.vbs

This file autorun.inf can be safely removed.

For those who use chat clients which displays “http://thecoolpics.net/blahblah.jpg” links, you are infected with W32/Sohana-D type of Worm.

Testing BitDefender Internet Security 2008

My friend Kenny posted a link on out forum. It’s the top 10 anti virus programs of 2008. To my surprise, BitDefender lead the pack with Kaspersky and Nod32 behind. Norton was so far in the top 10. So, to my assumption, I tried to check if BitDefender is a cool program to use. Right now, I’m on the beta stage of Testing BitDefender Internet Security 2008.
